Prototyping
From 2021 – 2022 I worked as a Senior Designer on a dedicated prototyping team at Halfbrick Studios.
This involved a combination of design and code (C#) to create unique prototypes using the Unity Engine.
Finding The Fun
New ideas were pitched and rapidly prototyped to identify what (if anything!) makes them enjoyably and unique.
Pitching new ideas
Deconstructing designs into actionable prototypes
Collaborating with designers, artists, programmers
Game Feel
A heavy focus on intuitive controls and fluid character movement, meant having maximum control over the prototype.
Custom vehicle controllers written from scratch
Custom touch-based input systems
Fine tuning camera, controls, characters
Game Loop Prototypes
Core gameplay prototypes sometimes advanced to more complex prototypes that could be played over multiple sessions.
Core gameplay loops
Progression systems
Reward systems
These were internal prototypes and cannot be shared publicly. One prototype was released publicly on itch.io and got over 300k YouTube views:
Octoclutz
A sandbox puzzle game inspired by Octodad and Untitled Goose Game. The player controls an octopus that climb on walls and ceilings.
The game was released on itch.io and gathered 300k YouTube views.
My contributions:
- Initial idea pitch
- Level design
- Puzzle design (in collaboration with one other designer)
